The worry scurry

A bike parked on our street.
We're in the throes of midterms. And when I say "we" I mean it. With Mikey putting in 70+ hour weeks with the books, I have had to do my own part to keep things rolling at home. Mostly my job entails not going crazy because I just want to hang out with him.

The first pangs of homesickness punctuated the last few days. Maybe the feelings came from a mixture of stress and sickness at our house. Either way, I'll be glad when the tests and worries are over.

Mikey worried before he started school that it wouldn't be hard enough (who is this boy?). We're happy to report that he's plenty satisfied with the difficulty level.

I'm fascinated by the things he's learning. It's encouraging to a girl who sometimes worries that her brain slowly atrophying that he trusts it enough to come home and tell me about his studies. His midterm paper? I love it. Here's a teaser paragraph for the 'rents.
My dad entered the emergency room and his jaw dropped. I was in a neck brace that fortunately turned out to be unnecessary but it certainly fueled his shock. His countenance bore one question, “How could this have happened?” When a tragic death occurs, the insensitive and often unenlightened approach is to find something specific to blame. The benefit of a near-death experience, is that there is an identical but much more acceptable inquiry: What prevented death? In my case, death was averted due to the confluence of simple and practical regulatory institutions in government, family, and community.
Sometimes I think he should be writing this blog.

Sono Americana di Utah

5 things I love about my Italian professor:
  • That she wears lots (and lots and lots) of bracelets. Yesterday I counted 12.
  • Her big hair
  • The way she shows us the intonation of a word (picture a cross between pointing at the ceiling while making a lassoing-motion with your arm and hula-hooping with the lower half of your body).
  • Her sense of humor
  • Her persistance
I feel so lucky to be in Bologna taking Italian from probably the most hilarious woman in the city. I love her. And I love my Mikey the most who stays home with the Ada Lou (who is getting increasingly hard to just set down and leave to play by herself).

Happy weekend. Where did this week go?!

A little bit of crazy

Things are picking up in the crazy department all the time around here.

Mike applied to a few graduate programs months ago and we've come to a decision on where we'll be going come September: Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Bologna. As in Italy. As in across the Atlantic Ocean.

Yes it's far, but it's only for a little while and I'm getting more and more excited all the time about the opportunity to be abroad for 9ish months (Hey! I could have another baby in that time!!*)

It came about like this: Mike was working on his applications in bed late one night while I was reading and staring at my ever-burgeoning belly. He asked, "Should I check the box to be considered for their Italy program?" and I giggled out something like, "SURE! WHY NOT?! Italy? I'd love to go!!" One little click on an online application . . .

and now we are going.

Like I said, crazy.

I sent in Ada's passport application (I'll post her awesome photo soon) a week ago so we could get it back in time to get our Visas. And I booked our flights two days ago.

CRAZY.

The second year of studies is in Washington DC. It makes me happy to think we'll be heading back to our old stomping grounds in a year or so.

*This is neither an announcement, nor a prediction. Merely an observation.
